Independence

Founded in the 1820s, Independence became a Baptist stronghold and educational center as the original site of Baylor University. The ruins of both the men's and women's original campuses remain at Old Baylor Park, with interpretive walking trails and a reconstructed bell tower — also one of the best local spots for spring bluebonnets. Just down the road, the Antique Rose Emporium is a genuine draw for gardening enthusiasts — an 8-acre retail garden of antique roses, native plants, and heirloom perennials, with a gift shop and grounds popular for weddings.
